So this is perfect for me.Chez Ferlich, the definition of “old” seems a little different than at the average booksellers. I see him flip through a book printed in 1943 which doesnt even make the cut. Most of his books are works of art in themselves: beautiful, gold-lettered, leather-bound volumes written by authors such as Gustave Flaubert and Emile Zola.Sadly, Ferlich is on the point of retiring. Once he is gone, it will be up to the City to decide who gets his spot. “They have a waiting list of one or two hundred people waiting to do this,” he tells me.

And I am not making one. I don’t remember banging or dropping or even smashing anyone or thing with it (and I don’t drink or do drugs), but I may have bopped it unknowingly. As a matter of interest, I am a product of the fifties and was a teenager in the sixties, so pardon me if I only have one point five (1.5) active brain cells that remember my past reasonably well!To summarized the problem in short order, I noticed this scratch on the 15th fret the other day when I was playing and bending really hard above the 12th fret. It snagged or got caught on the fifteenth fret only when I bent the high E or B string one and a half notes and higher.

Realistically, I hate to break a string, however I’m used to that. Further more I change strings every week. More of an issue is hurting my fingers. A cut or scratch or rip job could lay me up for a while. I would probably loose my mind if threaded rod for 3d printer I couldn’t play every day.Basically you have four choices. #1 is to replace the fret/s. #2 is to buy a new neck and replace the neck. #3 is to use some J.B. Weld epoxy and carefully fill and finish it. #4 is, do nothing.Four strategies. Which one is the best? Depending on your budget, and a few questions that may come up, like: are my other frets worn or in need of dressing up too? And can one fret be replaced without affecting the playing ability? Should I re-fret the whole neck? Can I use some J.B. Weld epoxy to smooth the fret?

Simply put, all strategies have a positive and negative side.

Most likely, you can buy a new neck and have it installed and set up for less than a fret job. A fret job can run three hundred bucks or more. I have seen new necks ready to bolt on for less than two hundred bucks. Even with labor, that is most likely the most cost effective way to go. You definitely want to get the right neck.As an experiment, one time when I was more broke than I am now, I fixed a fret with a nick in it with an epoxy. J.B. Weld is the brand I used, but there are many good FAST DRY epoxies in the hardware store, marine store or auto parts house. Fast dry is important. Mix your epoxy properly and thoroughly and with a toothpick put a drop of epoxy and smooth it out as much as you can. This is absolutely temporary in terms of a fix. Strings will wear the epoxy in a short time.

It is amazing how crazy my friend Paul is about Nike Dunks. It may not surprise anyone who knows him but for the new comers he is a New Jersey University graduate and earns handsomely in a Chicago based PR firm. I guess this gives a nice picture of his standard of living there and his ways of life. But Paul beats every imagination by his madness for shoes and the kind of money he cares nothing to buy them.

Paul buys sneakers as feverishly as do other sneaker obsessed zombies; he hardly cares standing in lines outside exclusive shoe stores in the wee hours waiting for them to open at nine before each Nike Dunks is released. His is not alone in his craze for Nike Dunks; he is similar in ways to all sneaker junkies in his craze over any new rarest, coolest pair of sneakers. Only, what shocks is he spends 50% of his annual earnings on collecting new shoes each year.

Paul is not lonely; the last time when Nike Dunk SB and Pigeon were released special part fastener he was the last person in the queue and there were 70 others standing before him in the line. Leading Japanese flat knitting machine builder Shima Seiki has launched two new high speed flat knitting machines for seamless knitwear which run at speeds of up to 1.6 metres per second. The four needle bed MACH2X and two rail accessories fastener needle bed MACH2S are being showcased at ITMA Asia + CITME 2008 which opened in Shanghai yesterday.

Like the SWG-X on which it is based, the new MACH2X is a Wholegarment machine which features four needle beds and Shima Seikis slide needle. As the name suggests the main features of the MACH2X are its increased knitting speed and greater productivity. The machines new R2 carriage system increases maximum knitting speed to 1.6 metres per second, and permits quicker carriage returns for higher efficiency per knitted course. A new split stitch technique allows efficient knitting when widening on sleeves by eliminating empty courses.

According to Shima, when combined, these features give up to twice the productivity of SWG-X, depending on knitting conditions. The machine on display was knitting a 12 gauge garment in under 20 minutes which is remarkable considering most SWG-X garments take the biggest part of an hour to knit.

MACH2X also allows for a tighter fabric especially for ribs, contributing to higher-quality Wholegarment items. The machine on show was a 15 gauge machine which has a needle hook equivalent in size to a 12 gauge needle. The garments produced are on the fine side of 12 gauge but the machine is aimed at the 12 gauge market with productivity improvements and better rib quality.

The new MACH2S is based on the NewSES-SWG two needle bed latch needle Wholegarment machine. It also features Shimas R2 carriage system for higher knitting speeds and greater productivity and is capable of gaugeless knitting whereby a number of different gauges can be knit in a single garment.
