Last Monday, Bryce Harper hit a preposterous broken bat MLB 18 Stubs home run. It was one of these consolidating and mesmerizing baseball minutes that didn’t call for a modicum of sabermetrics comprehension to love. Assuming that you grasp the DualShock 4 in an orthodox manner (and don’t play with a Steering Wheel or flight rod ), our goal with this guide is to empower your brain and thumbs with the same dexterity, confidence and power that enabled Bryce Harper to bludgeon that cowhide sphere all in the comfort of your own home.
I have played with The Show for more than 10 decades right now, and the nerfing of all early-count hitting was palpable and frustrating throughout the last few entries. Well-timed strikes that almost assuredly would be no-doubter house runs or extra-base strikes ripped down the line suddenly devolve into weak choppers or soft fly outs (this season, it is line drives right at the infielders). The worst part is, and this just happens after you become familiar with working counts, sometimes a meatball is too succulent to shoot and you betray your patience. The ball plops onto the outfield grass to get a clean single.
Suddenly, you feel as though you’ve cheated yourself from so many first-pitch meatballs. That is only the Show baiting you to revitalizing your ancient hacks. Go right ahead and swing aggressively at the first two pitches and see where it will take you even on Rookie. My answer: spare yourself the frustration and choose the first 2 pitches. I cannot recommend this enough before The Show’s punishments for early swinging get revamped. You’ll either be in 2-0, 1-1, or 0-2, and all three of those breed much better hitting approaches than a pitcher trying to place the tone at 0-0 or even 0-1. Just be wary on 2-0 counts as several hitters will attempt to square up a fastball early just to find that the pitcher is falling something off-speed to the zone. Baseball is a cruel game.
Bear in mind that simply timing pitches with a mere contact swing without a PCI movement can feed directly into the no-doubter house run animation. This can occur with players of any hitting stats too (mine arrived by means of Breakout Ryan Raburn (contrary to a righty), Live Jonathan Schoop, and Impact Veteran Babe Ruth). As tantalizing as it is to swing hefty and early (who doesn’t love destroying the baseball), this may be achieved without ever moving the PCI. Don’t treat MLB The Show 18 like MVP Baseball 2005 and try and use it to aim your swing.
The Show’s default configurations are based largely upon skill and time. As soon as you get more comfortable working counts and seeing the ball, then you need to overcommit together with the PCI to attempt to bloop singles into the opposite area or conquer an inside pitch. Set a comfortable rhythm in the plate prior to transferring the PCI around, and when you think you’re ready, begin by moving it up slightly to obliterate fastballs greater from the zone.
Much like my inability to take only one donut if a cheap MLB The Show 18 Stubs co-worker brings in an unnecessarily large collection of donuts in the morning, I can’t lay off of off-speed pitches an inch under the strike zone or fastballs that grab the exact bottom. Thankfully, MLB The Show 18 has one valuable quality that is very easy to miss: Custom Practice.
